Summary

Founded by Akpesiri (Ri) Iyovwaye in May 2021 Black Peoples Well-being Association (BPWA) was conceived as a resource to facilitate engagement and as a catalyst for Black peoples led agency.

Apolitical, secular and non-discriminatory, positive traditional values espoused by Black peoples around the world underpin the association’s activities.

The association is founded on a can do consciousness and as such it favors duty as a means of agency, a fundamental principal that is at the heart of many Black people’s histories. Our actions are guided by both a historical and contemporary perspective.

BPWA is not a profit making enterprise or charity, it has no paid members of staff and is operated 100% on a voluntary basis. BPWA does not solicit for funds nor does it accept any funding or financial donations. The association is driven by values, principles and ideas.

Further Details

Advancing on the basis of values first, our engagement cuts across our economic, emotional, physical and mental needs.

We start by acknowledging with respect and humility all of the positive contributions those who have gone before have made over the course of their lives for the greater good, no matter how great or small, be that in recent times or 100,000+ years ago. Our journey started there with them and not here. The purpose of BPWA is simply to add its contribution.

We are apolitical and secular and require members to conduct themselves accordingly while engaging with the organisation or any of its members. This is not a platform for political or religious discussions and engagement. What people do away from BPWA is of course totally up to them and we do not seek to influence anyone’s beliefs in any shape of form.

We are not a resource for idle gossip or blaming and judging others. There are many spaces for people to gossip and we see no need to duplicate such efforts here. As far as is possible we intend to be responsive rather than reactive in our approach.

It is helpful to touch on the word black. The likelihood of acceptance or agreement seems remote that if one were to take a trip back to a point in time e.g. 10,000 years ago and approach different groups with a range of skin tones that are today defined as black and, to put to them they do black music, or this or that is what black people do etc.

BPWA acknowledges and accepts there is no one type of those who are in a comparatively recent world-view defined collectively as black people, and that there is no one archetypal black person to which all others seek to use as a barometer. We are diverse, for instance some associate themselves with Africa while others associate themselves with elsewhere. Some are strong willed, others not as strong physically, different tastes and cultures abound etc.

BPWA will not be biased towards any one notion of blackness or another. All black peoples have equal standing under our roof and do not need to redefine themselves to fit with the most vocal, confident or largest grouping by landmass, culture, beliefs or any other criteria in order to feel accepted. Simply put, you are welcome as you are from wherever you are.

Who is likely to find BPWA useful?

In view of our acceptance of the wide diversity among black people and consequently that there are many different types, those who are open-minded and willing to engage with others who may be dissimilar/ in culture/origin/beliefs etc but place integrity, principles, values and good character above all else are most likely to find membership to be of use.

BPWA will appeal to those who do not elevate status or wealth above the inherent goodness that exists within many and the human capacity and capability that when harnessed constructively, can yield synergies for the greater good. It is for those who believe equitable reciprocity is key, those who are willing to give as well as take and believe in the spirit of ‘purposeful equitable engagement’ (PEE).

Code of conduct

Diversity can be harnessed positively by those who value it highly. Members are expected to conduct themselves and those they interact with in relation to the organisation in a dignified manner at all times. All are required to be respectful of our differences.
We have zero tolerance for any form of aggression or dis-respectful behaviour.

Sadly, no matter how accomplished an individual may be, we will have to part company with any member who fails to conduct themselves accordingly.
